I voluntarily punctured my face with hundreds of needles and survived to tell the tale.
Here’s all you need to know about the treatment, downtime, and of course results! (check out the quick video of the treatment at the end!)
Quickest way to get over the fear of needles? Say to yourself the following:
- No wrinkles
- Look 20 years younger
- Look f*cking flawless
I am deathly afraid of needles; or should I say I used to be. I nearly pass out every time I have to get a shot at the doctors. But if you tell me I’m going to look 5 years younger by sticking a needle in my face, I’ll throw down my credit card right then and there.
I know. Logically it doesn’t make any sense. Why would anyone voluntarily choose to be stabbed with needles or sign up for a procedure that sounds like it’s straight out of a book on medieval torture? Especially someone who has a fear of needles?
Well, because I am at the ripe old age of 30 and I’m starting to see things on my face that, simply putted… NEED. TO. GO.
If I could splurge on every treatment advertised in Med Spas across the country I would. My motto: Try everything once (Beauty related, that is). The issue is that many of these treatments come at a hefty price and my anti-aging piggy bank is not that big…YET.
The other issue? Most of the treatments –unfortunately– do not show immediate results and you need an average of “six treatments” to see results. I am sorry, but patience is not my strong suit.
I want instant, baby smooth, wrinkle-free results.
Reasons why I decided to give Micro-Needling a stab (get it?):
- The price. ($200 per treatment is not TOO bad compared to the $500 + laser treatments)
- I stalked a girl on social media that raved about her results (her face looked flawless)
- There is virtually no downtime. (more on this later)
Treatment Time: The treatment in itself is quick. Your face is numbed for approximately 30 minutes and the actual treatment takes about 30 minutes (give or take).
Procedure: I’ll save the technical stuff to the professionals, (you can read an article about it here) but during the treatment microscopic needles are inserted into your skin at different levels which cause invisible puncture wounds all over your face. A total of three passes are completed with each pass going deeper into the skin. Think of it like aerating your lawn, except on your face. In between each pass your esthetician will apply different serums (the serums will vary depending on what Med Spa you go to):
- Hydraulic acid -helps plump and hydrate your skin.
- C Ferulic acid – contains very powerful antioxidants helps protect against environmental damage, pigmentation, anti aging… pretty much the holy grail of all serums.
- Phyto Corrective Gel – helps minimize the appearance of discoloration and promotes a clear, fresh-looking complexion.
Pain level: Luckily you’re numb so pain is minimal. Without numbing cream this would most definitely be considered torture. OUCH! I’m not going to say it’s painless, because it’s not. However, the pain does go away almost instantly [unlike chemical peels where it feels like you’re roasting your face over an open fire for a good two hours after]. It’s totally manageable but if you need a break don’t be scared to ask your esthetician for a second to catch your breath.
Downtime: Pretty much zero. Okay, so maybe not ZERO… [I’m currently sitting here with dried up blood on my face] but this procedure has very minimal downtime.
Word of caution. This isn’t a treatment you can do on your lunch break, unless you want your coworkers to wonder if you’ve turned into a lunch-time ax murderer.
You are advised to keep the serums on your face overnight so washing your face is a no-no. You’ll also most likely have some specks of blood on your face after the procedure. The blood actually helps your face heal so again, no washing until the next day. Unless it’s Halloween, don’t plan on attending a soiree.
The following day your face will be a little pink; you may experience some minor peeling on day three; (I only peeled around my nose and chin) and by day four you should be good to go.
TIP: I try to not wear any makeup for the first four days to ensure that t I don’t clog any of my pores. Plus its a nice break for your face.
Now to the good stuff!
Why it is SO WORTH IT:
- Improve wrinkles, minimize pore size and induce skin tightening.
- Stimulate collagen production which promotes rejuvenation and keeps your skin looking young
- Improve surgical, traumatic, burn and acne scars
- Hyperpigmentation (brown spots and melasma)
- It may also improve stretch marks
Honestly speaking, this is the only treatment that I’ve done that gives me instant results AND keeps working for months after. My face is instantly smoother and the texture is AMAZING! Like, Kim Kardashian amazing. I can literally go out in public without wearing any foundation. Praise the lord! When I do put on makeup it goes on smoother, my face doesn’t get oily, and breakouts pretty much don’t exist.
Talk about instant f*cking gratification!
My skin continues to improve as new collagen is produced and by day 30 my face looks looks even better. My under eye area looks significantly better, my smile lines look less noticeable, and my face definitely feels firmer. I am ABSOLUTELY HOOKED!
Next time I may try the PRP micro-needling (Vampire Facial) but getting over the fear of getting my blood drawn is another story…..
Has anyone tried micro-needling? What are your thoughts? Have you tried the at-home derma-pen treatment? Let me know!!!
Yes, I know… the camera should be horizontal. In my defense, I wasn’t the one recording 🙂
